Lead well under pressure.
Pressure can affect how you communicate, decide, and support your people. Use the HEAL moves to notice what is happening and choose your response.
“You don’t have to make it sound better than it is. Start with what’s true.”
Four moves for a healthier leadership response.
Maurice F. Martin’s HEAL framework starts with awareness and moves toward action. Use it before a difficult conversation, after a demanding day, or when you notice pressure affecting how you lead.
- Hold the Mirror. Look at both the professional and the person. What is working? What is costing you? What do you need to acknowledge before you act?
- Examine Your Cup. Name the emotions, expectations, and responsibilities you carry. Which parts are nourishing you? Which feel heavy? What needs attention or support?
- Align & Act. Connect your next move to what matters. Choose a specific action, a time to take it, and what you will do if something gets in the way.
- Lead Well. Notice your impact on others. Ask what your people need before assuming. Choose a practical way to listen, clarify, encourage, or share the load.
Use the tools before the pressure spreads.
For example, before responding to a missed deadline, identify your frustration, check what you actually know, and prepare a question that clarifies the situation. A useful next step might be a conversation about expectations rather than a reaction based on assumptions.
